The Rail Systems Technology team is a globally networked group of operational experts with an international footprint specialising in providing advisory services to rail network operators around operations and maintenance of existing and new railways within the Rail sector. We specialise in providing operational advice to clients around changes in operations arising from the introduction of new systems and new technologies with operational specialisms in infrastructure operations (signalling systems and signalling control centres), asset maintenance and front line train operations. We also provide advice around how efficiencies and improvements can be made to legacy systems to realise benefits.

The team has on-going projects in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Australasia and is looking to both grow the team to support our offering and position of being the client advisor of choice and global leaders in providing these services.

We are looking for an experienced senior operations consultant to join our existing team in the UK. We are flexible on location, as we have a range of WSP offices around the UK. We are not just a delivery team – we are advisors to some of the biggest projects in Europe and we provide insights and operational support across the lifecycle including post project implementation. On some projects you will be in the detail resolving issues, on others you will be providing strategic advice for procurement or business cases. Customer-centric thinking is at the heart of WSP. This often leads us to work alongside clients in their offices and, with our expertise in demand globally, we also find ourselves travelling internationally.

The role will involve close and collaborative working with other technical discipline experts from our wider Rail Advisory Services function as well as the wider WSP Rail organisation. This will required the ability to collaboratively work with colleagues with expertise across the whole rail system to drive optimised outcomes and recommendations which provide a best whole-system solution.

As a senior operations consultant, what we do goes beyond technical expertise. We are here to ensure embedding new and complex technologies and projects can be done in as seamless a manner as possible and explore what is possible integrating approaches into whole system focused solutions. Our clients come to us not just because we are technical and operational experts but because we work collaboratively with them to consider each problem and shape the solution on their behalf.

We are a client facing team, so you need to be comfortable working with clients, both individually and as part of the Rail Advisory Services team; and we get involved in everything from detailed operational planning rules and regulations, franchise advisory and business differentiation through to commissioning and bringing into operations the new systems and processes which are defined. Our approach is to provide robust and holistic solutions that future proof the clients systems and acts as the strategic enabler they require. Because of our strong blend of technical insight and problem-solving ability we often get called in to act as trouble-shooters on difficult or complex projects – and whilst we prefer to work strategically, we have no problem getting hands-on where the role requires it. We seek to be entrepreneurial welcoming ideas, market insight and a flair for spotting an opportunity

Responsibilities

  • Operations specification, integration and interface with existing operations to bring new systems and approaches to operations into use

  • Considering the implications to operations of the introduction of new systems and technologies for new and existing rail networks across light and heavy rail applications in both the UK and Globally.

  • Developing concepts of operations, and operations and maintenance strategies

  • Supporting the development of industry approaches, documentation and white papers around changes in operations at a national level

  • Engaging clients directly to draw out their concerns and secure WSP work

  • Mentoring junior and graduate staff and work within a Multi-discipline project team.

Qualifications

  • Are a qualified operator either with a degree or vocationally trained

  • Are working towards or have achieved Chartered status

  • Have good experience of railway operations, from an infrastructure and/or rolling stock operational approach

  • Have knowledge of operational approaches for main line heavy rail, high speed rail, light rail, depot and stabling and rail freight operations – experience of more than one of these is a bonus

  • Understand how railway operations fits with whole rail system engineering and have knowledge of systems integration

  • Are comfortable writing papers and giving presentations, acting as the companies voice in industry.
